Our first day at GCCS

Sunday evening after we had some time to unpack and rest in the afternoon we enjoyed dinner with the Ordiales family, a couple friends from Grace Christian, and two guest pastors from the states. Our meal consisted of Pancit, a traditional Filipino dish, and Pizza Hut--another traditional Filipino dish :). After dinner we had to force ourselves to stay awake until 8:00pm so that we would sleep until morning.

Our first full day here was great. After a full night of sleep we woke up early and were introduced to Filipino showers--consisting of a bucket of water and a ladle. It is all part of our adventure here in the Philippines. We made it down in time for the flag raising ceremony at the school which takes place every Monday morning. After their national anthem, pledge to the Christian flag, and Bible, we were warmly welcomed and presented with the necklaces that you will see in one of the pictures below. After the students returned to their classrooms we were taken around by Teacher Yoy who introduced us to each classroom and showed us around the school. We then had some time to talk with the students at their recess--most were very shy but quickly warmed up to us.

After lunch we enjoyed talking to the grade 6 students as they taught us Tagalog--the language they speak and laughed a lot with us--we learned some simple words that I am not going to attempt to spell.

We then observed math classes in grades 5 and 6 taught by Teacher Yoy. We are going to be teaching those classes starting Wednesday so we wanted to see what was going on.

When those classes were done we went to the Mall of Asia--the third largest mall in the world--it was HUGE! We were able to get some groceries for lunches and dinners. After our shopping trip we stopped at Church's Chicken and had some fried chicken and rice.

We are now exhausted again--hoping that another nights sleep will help us get over the jet lag.
